As July 1 always belongs to Canada, so the weekend that follows is always ARTFEST...on the bay. This year July 4 and 5 was Meaford's to celebrate. Whatever other festivities were being held in town, they only helped to swell the crowds who wandered around the harbour enjoying the best art show and sale of many organized by the members of the Meaford Creative Arts Association.
The weather, which never rains on this parade, was perfect if a little cool. The site around the harbour was crowded with the artist's tents. Jazz from the Regal Jazz Band, Country and Western from Keray Wonch's group, the plaintive notes of Bob Gunn's harmonica and the spirited tapping of the step dancers drew crowds to the Pavilion while Grandma Lambe's frozen yogurt machine was kept busy in time to the music. Visiting children with quaintly painted faces were kept busy themselves painting ceiling tiles for the Hospital Auxiliary, while Cloe the Clown fashioned animals of their choice from her basket of balloons.
Thanks to the members of the Legion, the crowds were well fed and able to enjoy a beer with their lunch in the Pavilion followed by a horse drawn carriage tour of the Harbour in Windsong's Surrey with the Fringe on Top. All this did so much to add to the festive atmosphere, but without the wonderful array of art work brought in by the 76 participating artists, there would have been no ARTFEST...on the bay. This year it was exceptionally interesting and diverse.
All the members of the Meaford Creative Arts Association and particularly the organizing committee, with to expend their sincere thanks to the artists, the "Grannies" and Service Clubs who took part. There were many other individuals working behind the scene such as the Harbour Master and his crew and those who put in hours of mental and physical labour to put the show together who deserve special thanks. Time now to rest on your laurels and plan next year's ARTFEST...on the bay - may it be bigger and better!
Thank you also to all those to came to see our event. We hope you will come back next year to again take in one of the best "Art Crawls" of the summer.
